baby’s got the flu - it's all metaphor - written New Year's Eve 2018

baby’s got the flu
but her antibodies
have awakened

and her youth
and brown-eyed vitality
will prime her for the new year

and on the eve of the new
year the rear-view mirror
as I drive into the town

of Paradise is of carnage
and discarded dignities
and the loss of what we

thought was democracy
but the flu season is upon us
so no midnight kiss tonight
