It will be one of those winters (written just now... my first work of 2018)

It will be one of those winters
of which all peoples will talk
far into the future
if data still matters then
for most of us except maybe
those living along the equator
will have been during this winter
in a dark warm place
and will not have ventured out

but a sense that this is one of those winters

permeates the animal skins wrapped around us
and the animal skin with which we come into being
all wrapped around our bones
and the sealed spaces in the chinks—

permeates deeper than those winters before
and we will debate and never reach consensus
on whether acts of our own volition
have pricked this response from nature—

this response from a nature conscious of—
in its own very matter—and aware of—
in its own very spirit—
even our own very thoughts
